Product video on a Shopify page: placement beats production
A product video that autoplays with sound gets muted. A product video that answers the one question the page cannot gets watched. Placement and job come before polish.
Where to put it
| Placement | Job | Length |
|---|---|---|
| First image slot (as video) | Show the thing moving, answer "what is it" | 5–10s, muted, loop |
| Below the buy button | Handle the objection (size, texture, result) | 10–20s, captions |
| Cart or checkout side | Reduce last-minute doubt | Under 10s |
| Collection page | Sell the category, not one SKU | 15s, sound optional |
The four conversion killers
- Sound-on assumption. Most first views are muted. Burn the promise into the frame.
- Slow first frame. If the first frame is a logo or an empty surface, it reads as a banner.
- No measurement. Video needs its own analytics; otherwise you cannot tell if it helped or hurt.
- File weight. A 12 MB hero video on mobile costs you the visitor before the video plays.
What converts, in practice
A short loop that shows the product being used in its real context, plus captions that name the benefit in the customer's words. Not features, not a montage of happy people — one specific, concrete action.
Keep a vertical 1080x1920 master so the same asset serves the product page and paid social without a re-edit.

Common questions
Should the video autoplay with sound?
No. Autoplay muted with burned-in captions, and let the visitor unmute deliberately.
Is one video enough for a whole catalogue?
Use one structure and swap the context shot per product. The pacing is what carries over, not the footage.
